Is this normal for an eye exam? Never seen this before!

I went to an eye doctor recently--a new one I had not seen before. During the exam, he did a couple things I felt were unusual. First, he shined a red light in my eyes--you know the penlight they always do? Well, his was red, which was something I had never seen in a few decades of wearing glasses. In fact, I thought shining a red light in your eyes was dangerous--it looked exactly like those laser pointers you see and hear warnings about all the time. I didn't say anything because I thought maybe this was some new thing they had come up with, and that maybe the red light wasn't laser. Second, he simply asked me if I could 'see ok close up'--(I'm near-sighted). He didn't check my near vision at all. But he DID prescribe me bifocals. And then he went ahead and prescribed the glasses I have now. Since I got these things, I don't see with perfect clarity either far away OR close up. He also skipped several things I'm used to in eye exams--peripheral vision tests (at least, in any form I'd ever seen them before), etc. About all he did was the chart thing, the red light thing and taking my glasses out of the room--I assume to check their strength.

Thing is, I can't really see well either up close OR far off with the new glasses--simple things like shopping have become a daunting chore, as I can't read labels, etc. I'm feeling like I got ripped off. When I called back to complain, the office gal said she'd schedule me a 'follow-up'--I've never in all the time I've worn glasses, needed one, even when I first started wearing contacts. I set it up, but I've been sick since and haven't had enough well days to feel confident in scheduling a return exam--plus I'm really hesitant to trust a doctor who I feel so completely screwed up my first visit there. I spent a fair amount of money on a couple pairs of glasses, (bifocal and non) and with the health problems I have and those expenses, I can't afford to pay for replacing them.

I'm wondering if this doctor's practices are something anyone here has experienced, and, if not, what I should do about them? I've not had the experience of having to return to an eye doctor for a new prescription AFTER an exam before, but I am having trouble seeing and even doing normal things like reading (and isn't that what bifocals are FOR) and sewing, gardening, or grocery shopping with this prescription. Anyone ever go through this? What should I do?

Thanks.

Problem with viewing angle?

Hello,

I've just received my new glasses. They have a slim, wide frame and I had the lenses thinned down a couple of levels.

When looking straight ahead the vision is fine, but when I look at something at an angle, the vision is less clear. I'm testing this out by looking at the Google homepage - The more towards the edges of the lens that I view the word 'Google', the more it has an anoglyphic 3d effect, where the blue letters will have a red offset. This occurs when view left, right, up and down.

I don't experience this with my old glasses. My old glasses have a much larger frame and the lenses have not been thinned. My new lenses are very noticeably thinner at the centre of the lens than at the left and right edges.

Could an experienced member please explain where the fault is? Would it be the thinning, the lens shape/size, quality, or another reason?

Kind regards

I have a pair of ORGREEN Choppers that i used in the last two years. I recently purchased another ORGREEN, this time its the ORGREEN CPH (might be part of the skyline edition), and a pair of WOODY eyeglasses. I am looking for a place/someone that is willing to trade old frames in the same price range (i.e. IC! berlins etc), I paid about $400 for the frames 2 years ago. Or can someone please point me to the right direction/website where they offer this barter system for eyewear afficionados like us. btw, i am from toronto. thanks
