Has anyone in Florida been successful at getting a drivers' license or driving safely after being diagnosed with hemiopsia? I was diagnosed with homonomous hemiopsia ( blind spot in right side of both eyes)about 14yrs. ago and drove carefully and safely for 6 years afterwards before, without my knowlege, an eye doctor "turned me in" to the DMV as an "possibly unsafe driver" and my license has been suspended by the FL DMV. I had easily passed the local eye test/requirements and received a valid license here. Some states, it seems, have no minimum levels of field of vision. Most research has shown that those with hemiopsia drive as safely as those without it as long as other faculties are normal. Florida, however, has a state driving requirement of 130 degrees of CONTINUOUS
central horizontal vision. Eye scanning, head movements, mirrors, etc. easily compensate, but FL DMV medical board continues to deny one an license.
Does anyone have a similar situation? Have you had success driving ?
