    Default Living with progressive blindness

I am going blind. I have ONH and I have been having sight problems since childhood. I would like to be independent. I have an aide that goes to my school and reads the assignments to me, and she also helps me move around the school.

I would like to be more independent, though...

Are there any technology that you could suggest for me?

There are actually a lot of things that you could do if you want to be more independent with your disability. I have personally not heard of ONH, but if you have low vision problems, you can get magnifiers, eyepal, CCTV reading assistance, or a computer that has speech recognition or text to speech capabilities/software.

I just inherited 2 of the Acobat magnifiers from my father-in-law who passed away in August. They are very new though quite expensive new. He paid $2500 for the 19 inch and $2800 for the 22 ". They are almost new and mint condition. They wouldn't help someone completely blind of course, but they are quite an amazing tool. He kept one in the kitchen to cook / read by and one in his office. I would knock the price down $1000 if you are interested. We will be donating them for a writeoff of about equal benefit to me before the end of the year.

There is no treatment for ONH; however, many therapeutic interventions exist for the care of its symptoms. These may include hormonal replacement therapy for hypopituitarism, occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy. The special emphasis of early development of oral motor skills and acclimation to textured foods for children with texture aversion, or who are otherwise resistant to eating, should be observed.

Treatments of vision problems may include patching of the better eye, which may result in improved vision in the worse eye; however, this should be reserved for cases in which potential for vision improvement in both eyes is felt to be good. Surgical correction of strabismus should be used for children with symmetrical functional vision in both eyes, but otherwise should be deferred until it becomes a psychosocial issue.
