Default Critical eye exams for everyone - 01-11-2010, 01:51 PM

As one of the most sensitive organs of the human body, the eye is prone to risk. Natural aging, disease and injury may contribute to eyesight deterioration in one person. Doctors suggest that ordinary people should visit an ophthalmologist systematically to get a complete eye exam. Individuals should receive a regular eye exam at least every three years. Early detection and treatment of underlying eye diseases are critical for maintaining good eye health.

With the current medical and surgical visual treatments, most of the eye diseases are curable. Even if some of them are not entirely curable currently, they can be kept under proper control. The keep point is to detect and diagnose these diseases at an early stage. Without early detection, some eye diseases can lead to fatal results such as permanent impairment and even absolute blindness.

However, visionary dysfunctions may not have predominant symptoms, so that ordinary people in most cases can not realize an eye disorder. In these cases, regular eye examinations from an ophthalmologist are quite essential. Those tests can evaluate colorblindness, visual accuracy and peripheral vision. In some cases, other diseases such as high blood sugar and high blood pressure can be unexpectedly diagnosed.

Most people know that there is a basic eye test which requires a patient to read alphabets on a chart. This popular test can be used to detect visual abnormalities. Alphabets in the bottom of the chart are the smallest and those myopic patients can only read larger alphabets in higher lines.

Children are more susceptible to visual problems such as nearsightedness and astigmatism. In fact, eyesight plays an indispensable role in children’s school study. Poor vision in children may still hinder their future education. Parents should arrange eye exams for their kids more frequently.

Actually there are quite a few visual problems or diseases that are commonly found in children. Junenile diabetes can greatly affect the eyesight of a child, who must be kept under strict medication. Crosses or squinted eyes, lazy eyes or turned-out eyes are commonly detected in toddlers between 1 and 5.

Several groups are also particularly required to have regular check-ups. Professionals like drivers and software analysts always strain their eyes for 10 to 12 hours every day. Their eyes are surely more likely to suffer visual problems. People wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses also need regular doctor’s visits, in order to get prescription check or update.
